The Chartered Healthcare Consultant® (ChHC®) designation starts with two key courses: Essentials of Healthcare Reform and The Healthcare Consultant. Both are offered in the popular 10-week live class format for full College credit.

Even advisors who aren’t involved with healthcare benefits should know the basic terminology and parameters of the new laws, because ancillary benefit programs will also be affected. Program Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  1. Explain relevant Affordable Care Act components and regulations to small and large group clients
  2. Develop strategies for clients to reduce tax liability or avoid tax penalties under the law, consistent with ethical and professional standards
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of various models of individual health insurance contracts and guide individuals toward a plan for purchasing and maintaining affordable health, long-term care and disability insurance
  4. Develop group benefits to meet the needs of employees while protecting the fiscal interests of sponsoring entities
  5. Conduct business in accordance with the ethical and professional standards set forth in The American College’s Code of Ethics

    HS 313

    Provides an overview of individual health insurance that is designed to meet the needs of individuals, families and certain business situations. Covers medical expense insurance, disability income insurance and long-term care insurance. Discusses types of policies, contractual provisions, regulation and underwriting. Consumer-directed health plans are also covered.

    Advanced Topics in Group Benefits
    HS 340

    Covers various advanced topics in group benefits. Addresses COBRA, ERISA, HIPAA privacy rules, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, health plans for federal workers, voluntary benefits, dental benefits, self-funding, international benefits and ethics.

    Healthcare Reform for Employers and Advisors
    HS 345

    This course is a comprehensive overview of major changes to employee health benefits and the healthcare system since the passage of the Affordable Care Act. The student will understand the issues that lead to reform and how the ACA aims to address them. The course will provide thoughtful insight into who is impacted by which provisions and empower students with clarification and knowledge about complex reforms. Students will learn the details of the employer mandate, the health insurance exchanges, new consumer protections, reporting requirements, the medical loss ratio and revised internal and external review processes under healthcare reform. Students who successfully pass this course will be positioned to serve effectively in the new environment created by the historic healthcare reform of 2010.

    The Healthcare Consultant
    HS 346

    This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills for healthcare professionals to operate in the new environment formed by passage of massive healthcare reform legislation in 2010. The course first reviews the effects of healthcare reform at the federal and state levels and the consequences for insurers, employers, and individuals. Next, the course explores the regulatory environments including state regulations and federal agencies such as the Department of Labor, Internal Revenue Service, and the Department of Health and Human Services. With that overview, the subject turns to the evolving role of the healthcare consultant and new opportunities as a fee-based healthcare consultant. The course emphasizes communications, the healthcare planning process, and characteristics of successful consultants. Finally, the course explores group health plans, individual plans, and ethical business practices.

    To receive the ChHC® designation, you must successfully complete all courses in your selected program, meet experience requirements and ethics standards, and agree to comply with The American College Code of Ethics and Procedures.

    PACE Recertification

    A Recertification Fee is applied to First-Time PACE-Required Designees after February 1, 2007. A fee of $250 (recurring every two (2) years) covers multiple designations and is not retroactive for prior PACE-required designees.

    *Approximately 90% of PACE recertification fees will be used for public awareness of the designations.

    Refund Requests

    All requests for refunds must be made in writing to the Office of Professional Education, The American College, 270 S. Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. We will refund your course tuition less a $125 cancellation fee for 30 days into the quarter for which you are registered. Textbooks do not need to be returned and no refund will be given for these textbooks.

    Why is The America College moving the Registered Employee Benefits Consultant® (REBC®) and the Chartered Healthcare Consultant® (ChHC®) designations to the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU)?

    In partnership, NAHU and The College have determined the optimal location for the REBC® and the ChHC® designation is with NAHU. The College will focus on offering credentials and degrees for life insurance professionals, financial advisors, wealth manager and planners, while NAHU broadens its focus on employee benefits and healthcare education.

    When do I need to complete all my courses including exams to earn the REBC® and/or the ChHC® designation thru The College?

    By June 30, 2017

    What is the last day for potential students to enroll and declare REBC® and/or ChHC® as their designation(s)?

    January 1, 2016

    How do I know how this impacts me and what I need to do?

    All currently enrolled REBC® and ChHC® students will receive an email in December outlining their transcript information for these (2) designation and identification of what courses they need to take to earn the REBC® and/or ChHC® designation.     How will this work with the Current Curriculum program, which goes into effective 7/1/16?

    In-process REBC® and ChHC® students enrolled before 1/1/16 will be exempt from the Current Curriculum effort as it relates to the REBC® and ChHC® studies.
