RHU - Registered Health Underwriter is Discontinued

Frequently Asked Questions

  •
Why is The American College discontinuing the RHU® designation?

Because of the significant changes brought about by healthcare reform, we will no longer be enrolling new students in the RHU® (Registered Health Underwriter®) program after December 31, 2013. Students who are already pursuing the RHU® mark as of that date will be allowed eighteen months to complete the program (through June 30, 2015).

When will students no longer be able to enroll in the RHU® designation?

After June 30, 2015, the RHU® mark will no longer be conferred. Importantly, if you earn the RHU® mark by June 30, 2015, you may continue using the designation for the duration of your career as long as you remain an RHU® designee in good standing with The College. They must still complete 325 (Group Benefits) and 340 (Advanced Topics in Group Benefits) and one elective (either 313 when it is again available, Individual Health Insurance, or 344, Advanced Topics in Managed Care)..

What courses will be available to current RHU® students after December 31st, 2013?

We are careful at The American College to make the transition of educational programs as seamless as we can and to not penalize current students or designees when circumstances lead us to change our rules or programs. Beginning January 1, 2014, students coming to The College for healthcare education will pursue courses in the ChHC® program, the Chartered Healthcare Consultant®. Many RHU® students and designees have already moved to this new program that reflects the most recent changes in healthcare reform. You may want to consider learning more about the ChHC® program if you have not done so already.

Will I still be able to use my RHU® mark after June 30th, 2015?

Professionals who earn the RHU® mark prior to June 30, 2015 may continue to use that mark for the rest of their careers as long as they continue to abide by the rules and procedures of The College.

Will my RHU® designation still be listed on DesignationCheck.com?

RHU® should remain on DesignationCheck.com until June 30, 2015, both as a searchable designation and as a designation explained to consumers.
