Ten Reasons Why the 4 Percent Rule is Too Simplistic

The well-known annual 4 percent withdrawal rate was originally presented as a fail-safe gauge for retirees to safely spend down their retirement savings over an anticipated 30-year period. New retirees today, however, are living through unprecedented market volatility and currently low interest rates. This uncertain economic environment is just one of several factors that challenge the sustainability of this old tried and true withdrawal rate. In reality, there are those for whom a lower rate of withdrawal would be more sustainable, while others may benefit from a higher withdrawal rate.

The respected Dr. Wade Pfau, CFA®, Professor of Retirement Income in our new PhD program, wrote an article in the Spring 2014 issue of The Wealth Channel Magazine, that gives us ten good reasons why the 4 percent rule is too simplistic.

Summer Doesn't Have to Mean Slow Business

During the summer months, business tends to slow down for some advisors, making many feel their networking opportunities are losing momentum. However, there are many ways to network during the warmer months to keep your business active.
  • Invite your clients and contacts to a sporting event, like a minor league baseball game. Tickets are affordable, and it's a great way to reconnect. Buy a block of tickets and give everyone a chance to network, making it productive for all involved.
  • Volunteer your time at a charity or corporate event. The summer is the perfect time to donate your time and effort to the company golf outing or charity event. You can use this time to serve your community while acquiring new contacts.
  • Join the committee of a professional or nonprofit organization and help them plan activities for the fall. This is a great opportunity to meet new people interested in the same things as you, which could lead to future ventures.
Use the warm summer months as a reason to get outside, enjoy the weather and make new contacts!

Real-Life Perspective on How the ChHC® Program Can Help Advisors in Their Practices

Adam Beck, Assistant Professor of Health Insurance, asked his students questions to learn how the information he's teaching translates to the real-life situations they face every day. He explains, "For me, hearing from students in the field is as important as any academic research I conduct. The best-laid plans and policies that make sense on paper don't always conform to the realities that financial professionals face in the real world. When I get feedback, I not only learn a great deal myself, but it allows me to adjust a course to better teach to the reality."

Adam Beck Adam teaches HS 345 Healthcare Reform for Employers and Advisors – part of the Chartered Healthcare Consultant® (ChHC®) designation created to address the gaps in knowledge advisors may have on Healthcare today and the laws of the Affordable Care Act. Kevin Davis, Advisor of Employee Benefits at Lacher & Associates, shares his reactions to the course and the designation program:

"From the HS 345 class, I was able to calculate the affordability of plans, explain the purpose and intentions of the ACA requirements, and advise clients on how to best meet those requirements."

"The material that addressed the role of agents and brokers post-ACA was the most beneficial topic for me," says Kevin. "In particular, there was practical discussion about how my role as an employee benefits advisor has transformed from that of a traditional agent, to that of a consultant advising my client in a number of areas. Those areas include exchanges, funding alternatives, coordination and integration of benefits, implementing cost-saving measures, assisting with detailed enrollment issues and requirements, familiarity with laws and regulatory guidelines, and providing ongoing assistance with compliance."

Kevin concludes: "Whether you are involved in the employee benefits field as a benefits advisor, an insurance carrier representative or a Human Resources or Benefits manager, I would recommend the material in the ChHC® curriculum to become more well-rounded and educated on the most current laws of healthcare today."

Advisors: Put Your Mask on First Before Assisting Others

Written By: Anthony Boquet (Tony), CLU®, ChFC®, CASL®, CLF®, LUTCF
Vice President
The American College

The airplane sits idling on the tarmac just feet beyond the exit ramp. "Should we experience a decrease in cabin pressure, four oxygen masks will fall from the ceiling compartment in front of you. Please secure your own mask before assisting others." Anyone who has traveled by air has heard the flight attendants' safety presentation.

"Put your mask on first before assisting others." Why do you think that is so important? Well, if you become deficient of oxygen for long enough, you will pass out and be unable to help anyone, indirectly causing harm to those you wanted to help. Through the years, I have come across many clients and fellow employees whose current advisor or manager could not satisfy their "oxygen" needs.

Starting my sales career at the ripe age of 21, within the first couple of years, I came to the realization that I was not making the sales I should be making. Always being the humble one, at least in my own mind, I never imagined the problem to be something I was or wasn't doing that caused this problem. A few years later, with all the infinite wisdom that a 23-year-old could possess, I decided to grow a beard to make myself look older and wiser. After three weeks of not shaving, my mentor called me into his office and asked if my razor was broken. I quickly and proudly explained my plan to him. After an inordinate amount of laughter on his part, he made a statement that changed my life, the lives of all my clients and people who reported to me. Henry Mattason, CLU® proclaimed, "son, you cannot make yourself older than you are, but you can make yourself smarter than your competition." Right then he reached for the phone and enrolled me in the Chartered Life Underwriter® designation program through The American College.

At the time, Henry saw something in this impetuous young man that I did not see in myself. He was my assistant on the plane, already wearing his oxygen mask, which was the CLU® credential proudly inscribed on his business card. Because I could see Henry's mask, I knew how important it was that I follow his guidance; it put my mind at ease. He passed along education in the form of oxygen flowing through the mask.

Henry has long since retired, but is still in my thoughts and prayers. I hope I have been able to carry on in his footsteps and in a manner he would be proud. I don't think I can ever stop learning because education is the oxygen, and my designations are the mask needed to be able to assist others. So, the next time you take a trip by airplane, and the flight attendant pulls out the oxygen mask, ask yourself "do I have a professional oxygen mask that provides me with the air I need to be the best I can be to those I serve?" Conversely, if you really think you don't need one, then I challenge you to give your prospective clients the choice over which advisor would be better equipped to handle their needs. Time after time, they will trust the wisdom and advice of the advisor with the most education.

Women and Retirement
Women and Retirement: An RICP® Can Help

The RICP® (Retirement Income Certified Professional®) curriculum is built around the core competencies that a retirement planner must master to be successful. One clear advantage from the RICP® course of study is the education on retirement planning for women.

Consider the following:

  • Many women retiring today have fewer years in the work force, smaller defined benefit plans, smaller defined contribution assets, and smaller Social Security benefits based on their work history.
  • Women have generally been more conservative investors in their savings and retirement accounts, hurting their portfolio performance over the long term.
  • Women have exceptionally long life-expectancies. On average, women will live 3 to 4 years longer than men. Including women who remain single, are divorced or widowed, more women will live out their lives in an unmarried state as opposed to men.
  • Among women who marry, an estimated 75 percent of them will outlive their husbands and will inherit most, if not all, of the assets owned by the couple while both were alive.

Women must receive increased attention from financial advisors and they should also be involved in their retirement and estate planning. They should fully understand what assets are available, their investments' risk/return characteristics, potential life insurance proceeds, and they should have a game plan for liquidating assets as a widow. Advisors who have earned their RICP® are well equipped to handle these delicate issues with confidence. Studies also reveal that women who trust and appreciate their financial advisor are more likely to remain with their advisor after the death of a husband, and to recommend him or her to others.

The RICP® designation is more than just "cutting edge." The material is robust, it is deep, and it is broad. Even the most experienced advisors who have taken these courses often rave about the new and valuable insights they get from the material. So, check out the RICP® today and be on your way to the top tier of retirement income planners!

  • HS 340: Advanced Topics
    in Group Benefits

Gift of Granum
It's Al Granum's Birthday — But YOU Get The Gift!
It has been said that Al Granum was to our industry what Henry Ford was to the automotive industry. He is probably best known for establishing the famous 10-3-1 ratio and creating the One Card System. His Building a Financial Services Clientele text provides a veritable blueprint for creating a successful practice. In it, he talks about both The Art and The Science of building a clientele. The Art includes the sales cycle – the steps and artful language required to move someone to take action and become a client. The Science includes the predictable relationship of activity to results.

In honor of Al's birthday (March 1st), The Northwestern Mutual Granum Center for Financial Security is providing YOU with the gift. This March, and every March going forward, we'll share a couple of the timeless Granum principles that can impact your practice TODAY. You'll hear directly from Al, along with different perspectives from current financial professionals who relate his teachings to their practice today.

CAP - Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy

From a Humble Beginning, Came a Noble Designation – The CAP®
Phil CubetaHave you ever wondered how you could contribute more to society? Some financial advisors have discovered how through philanthropy – a part of the financial services world where advisors get to help their clients give back to the communities they live in to ensure the betterment of future generations. It takes a special kind of individual to look past personal financial gain and understand the value in enriching other people's lives and the society in which they live. The American College understood that need and created the CAP® designation which educates advisors on how to help families create their legacy. We interviewed Program Chair, Phil Cubeta, CLU®, ChFC®, MSFS, CAP®, to discuss the inception of the CAP® program and its evolution.

FSCP - Now Available

How are Your Social Media Skills?

Social networking has entered a new era. The times have shifted from networking over cocktails and passing out business cards in hopes of a returned call, to doing most of our networking on our smart phones and/or tablets. We have entered into an era where personal interaction skills rival the importance of listening to consumers online to determine their specific needs.

How does listening online make sense? The American College created a new module based primarily on social media and how it can help advisors hone in on the needs of their clients. In this practical module you'll cover:

  • How to put your audience first
  • How Social Technographics research can help you build the right user persona
  • How to set up the most effective LinkedIn profile
  • How to grow your LinkedIn network
  • Case studies on advisor uses of Facebook and Twitter
  • Managing your time on social media
  • How to measure your impact

You might now ask what a module-based learning platform is and what the benefits are to our students. Below is a short Q&A of this new, cutting-edge course delivery.

Q. Why is The American College offering modular delivery?
A. Modular training delivers short, direct, self-paced training vs. long schedule based educational classes. It allows students to choose the topics they most need.

Q. How does it work?
A. Students choose the modules they want to complete and enroll. When students enter the module, they are greeted with five lessons of content and best practices for the completion of the module. The online classroom students enter was designed to be simple and clean, providing a streamlined experience.

Q. What makes this delivery format different from other choices?
A. Modules are intended to give students direct access to the most valuable information from some of the most critical course content, to some new and innovative content too. Unique learning elements have been integrated into self-paced lessons that encourage students to pause and reflect on the information they are consuming and how they can apply it practically in their professional life. Practitioners from the field have partnered with The College to contribute their expertise via video vignettes, which capture the essence of what it means to be a financial professional in today's world.

One Person: Transforming Lives with The American College

One Person Campaign Enters Final Year
In 2009, our faculty identified initiatives that would launch The American College into a renaissance of academic excellence while addressing the changing needs of our industry and people we serve. The following year, the Board approved a five-year, $50 million campaign that would make these initiatives a reality.

The American College One Person: Transforming Lives with The American College has reached 75% of its goal, with leadership gifts from individuals and companies totaling $37.5 million. These generous contributions have supported four new centers of academic excellence: The Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs, The Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services, The State Farm Center for Women & Financial Services and The Northwestern Mutual Granum Center for Financial Security. New York Life also made a generous donation that enabled us to create a groundbreaking new PhD program focused on financial and retirement planning.

Now, 2014–the final year of the One Person campaign–can be the most impactful yet. All alumni have the opportunity to use their Annual Giving contribution to participate in the One Person campaign. Donations help invest in world-class teaching; support distinguished research; and harness technology that meets the learning needs of today's professionals.

Tax-deductible contributions of any amount are appreciated since they support The American College as the leading nonprofit educational institution dedicated to the financial services industry. To celebrate the successful conclusion of the $50 million One Person campaign, the top contribuors will be treated to a special evening of cocktails and entertainment at the United Nations on December 4, 2014, the night prior to the annual black-tie President's Dinner at New York City's spectacular Gotham Hall.

Contact Claudia Stowers at 610-526-1423 or Allen Thomas at 610-526-1422 to discuss your contribution to the One Person campaign. Or, visit our website for more information and instructions on how to give your gift online.

The American College Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services

The American College: Promoting Ethics in Our Industry
On January 11th, 2014, a group of four executives and six academic ethicists gathered in Phoenix, Arizona to participate in the fourteenth annual James A. and Linda R. Mitchell/The American College Forum on Ethical Leadership in Financial Services. The purpose of this annual event, established in 2001 by Jim and Linda Mitchell, is to provide executives with an opportunity to reflect on ethical issues they confront on a regular basis, discuss questions posed to them by academics engaged in business ethics education, and to afford academics the opportunity to engage in discussion about these issues with top level executives so they can bring that experience back to their classrooms.

Although many pertinent questions were raised during this important forum on ethics, the theme kept circling back to one main point: The responsibility of ethics is a shared one. It is up to our leaders to instill certain ethical standards in their staff and hope these standards become part of the culture – infused in every level of management, and every level of employee. To read more on how ethics play such a vital role to the financial services industry, visit: ethics.theamericancollege.edu.

Michael DavidsonA Letter from Michael Davidson, MSM, CLU®, CAP®

Beginning February 1st, I will be humbly stepping in as Acting President and CEO of The American College. During this time of transition, I would like to extend to you my support and uncompromising pledge to preserve our heritage. I am honored to lead our renowned faculty, centers, staff, students and alumni alike.

Although new to this role, I am not a stranger to The College. I have served The College in many functions, most recently as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, from 2010-2012. During this time, I was involved in the creation of the State Farm Center for Women and Financial Services at The American College. Recently retired after 34 years with State Farm, I sincerely look forward to working with everyone associated with this great institution.

I would like to thank Dr. Larry Barton, CAP® for entrusting me to continue the standard of excellence he worked so hard to achieve and am looking forward to contributing to our award-winning designations by promoting their importance to our industry. As Adjunct Professor of Agency Excellence here at The American College, I know we try to add to our curriculums each year by giving our students the most valuable learning experience, tailored to fit their lifestyle and study habits. In 2014, we welcome the Chartered Special Needs Consultant™ (ChSNC™) and the Financial Services Certified Professional™ (FSCP™) designations to our list of designations and look forward to fostering the growth of the already popular retirement planning mark – the RICP®.

We thank you for your continued support and look forward to a successful 2014!

Sincerely,

Mike Davidson, MSM, CLU®, CAP®

Introducing the New Director of The American College's Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs: Ted Digges, CAPTAIN, SC, USN (Ret)
Ted Digges The mission of the Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs is to provide military scholarships to the courageous men and women who served honorably in the armed services and their spouses. By awarding the talents of the military's best and brightest, the spirit of the financial services profession will be infused with a talent pool vital to the economic integrity and sustainability of an industry comprised of determined and mission-minded individuals.

Heading up this important Center for veterans is Ted Digges, CAPTAIN, SC, USN (Ret). He joined The College in the capacity of Director of the Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs this past Veterans Day. Ted is a Naval Academy graduate with a Masters in Management and graduate of the Darden School's Executive Program at University of Virginia.

"I am thrilled and honored to be part of The American College Team," said Digges, "and very much look forward to serving those who serve by heading up this organization! "

Ted honorably served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years, retiring as Navy Captain. Being a veteran himself, Ted can connect with transitioning veterans because it was not long ago when he was in their shoes, experiencing all the excitement and anxiety of leaving the Service and looking for a new civilian career.

Ted joins us from Merrill Lynch, where he worked in Wealth Management. He previously served as President for a non-profit organization whose focus was on building esprit de corps, charitable endeavors and networking. His understanding of the financial services industry supports his work with the Center; having been one of the early recipients of a PMCVA scholarship, he knows what the process is like and can serve as a true mentor and partner to our returning veterans.

We are very grateful to welcome Ted to The College and look forward to bringing the PMCVA to its fullest potential. We are committed to honoring the men and women who have served this country. The Center's motto is "Empowering Heroes," which really says it all. We encourage interested individuals to visit the PMCVA website to see how we can help you.

Davidson, MSM, CLU®, CAP®, former Chair of the Board of Trustees and retired Vice Chairman and Chief Agency & Marketing Officer for State Farm Insurance Companies, will serve as Acting President and CEO starting February 1. A search committee to replace President Barton will begin its work next year.

In his new capacity as Chancellor, Dr. Barton will continue to be the voice of the institution at select company and legislative meetings, advance fund raising efforts and continue as a senior faculty member as the O. Alfred Granum Chair in Leadership. Dr. Barton is one of the world's leading experts in crisis management and threat assessment and is the author of four books on the subject; he serves on the editorial boards of five peer-reviewed academic journals.

"I am so grateful to the faculty, staff, alumni and Board members of The College," Dr. Barton notes. "There is a time when each of us knows it is time to retire from one role and make a better and different contribution, and this is the right time for that transition. I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished, and energized about the transformation ahead", he adds.

At the age of 27, Dr. Barton was the youngest person ever appointed to the faculty of Harvard Business School; he also served on the faculty of Penn State University and Boston College. An award-winning teacher and author, he was named a Fulbright Scholar to Japan in 1994 and was the 2010 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Roundtable of New York for his contributions to the financial services industry. Dr. Barton and his wife, Eliza Barton, CAP®, have two grown sons and one grandson.

How Are Insurance Companies Preparing to Work Around
the ACA in 2014?
The Affordable Care Act, frequently referred to as Obamacare, is on the horns of a difficult dilemma. For the entire system to work, it needs to enroll millions of young "invincibles," that is, the (generally) healthy 30-something young people whose premiums (and low health care claims) will help fuel the system for older, sicker insureds. The federal government's "deal" with the health insurers depended on a mandate to purchase health insurance (with a penalty tax for non-compliance) to drive large numbers of young people onto the health care exchanges. However, the online exchange (healthcare.gov) rollout on October 1st was a disaster as the system froze up (but never crashed, per government spokespersons), had multiple errors, and could not enroll people in the huge numbers needed. After intensive efforts to repair the website, it re-launched on December 1st and showed considerable improvement in speed and accuracy. However, multiple press reports say that healthcare.gov's "back end" systems are still not working to pay the insurance companies or to verify subsidies for enrollees. Problems remain.

Health care While the clock has been ticking on fixing healthcare.gov, health insurers have employed some workarounds to enroll new consumers. Following is a brief description of some "detours" insurance companies have taken to facilitate enrollment.

(1) Working with the federal administrators, there is now a temporary process to pay insurers the federal subsidies that millions of Americans will be due under the Affordable Care Act. Insurers will estimate what they are owed in subsidies rather than having the subsidies calculated through healthcare.gov. The estimates will be reconciled at a later date by federal administrators. Note that in cases where consumers have been given subsidies above what they should have gotten, the consumer will have to repay them out of pocket…a nasty surprise for some.

(2) The federal government is setting up a pilot program in some states to allow consumers to purchase health insurance directly from insurers and bypass the exchanges altogether. It is unclear if the insurers using this method will give consumers all their options, including policies offered by competitors…probably not!

(3) A third workaround for insurers came from an announcement by President Obama that insurers would be able to continue to offer old ("substandard") policies to consumers through 2014. Over 5 million consumers had received notices that their policies would be discontinued in January 2014 because they did not conform to the Affordable Care Act's minimum essential benefit requirements. The President gave the option to state insurance commissioners, and the insurers themselves to decide whether to continue the older policies. The response has been mixed, as some state insurance commissioners declined to allow the continuation.

We can be sure that healthcare reform will continue to make news well into the future. The government is pushing to make it work, some politicians are pushing back strongly, and insurers have incurred whiplash in responding to frequent changes. The phrase of the day is "stand by for news!"

It's Not Too Late to Make a Tax-deductible Contribution!
Your College is non-profit and made a genuine difference in your career! As we recruit new faculty, build new programs and grow national recognition of your designation and degrees, we ask that you please consider a gift back so we can continue the legacy of our founder, Dr. Solomon S. Huebner. Support your favorite organization by December 31: you may be able to reduce your 2013 tax bill.

Give Online
The most convenient and secure way to ensure that your year-end gift is received on time is to donate online through your favorite charity's website. Most organizations include a user-friendly giving portal that accepts all major charge cards. For example, an individual can go to the website of The American College by using the link www.theamericancollege.edu/giving to make a donation. Be certain you make the online gift before midnight on December 31. Donations charged to a credit card before the end of 2013 will count for 2013, even if the credit card bill isn't paid until 2014.

Give by Check
Giving by check is a traditional method. But, with increased holiday mail traffic, make sure your contribution mails on or before December 31, 2013. The IRS requires that the postmark – not the date on the check – be December 31 for it to qualify for a deduction.

Give by Stock
Appreciated securities may result in additional tax savings. If you have owned stock for more than a year, allowing it to grow in value, you may use it to make a gift to an organization and avoid paying the capital gains tax you would owe had you cashed it in yourself. The stock gift, and properly endorsed stock power, should be postmarked by December 31 to qualify as a 2013 gift. If donors choose to mail a gift of stock, it is recommended that both the stock certificate (unendorsed) and the signed stock power be mailed in separate envelopes with return receipts requested.

Give by IRA Rollover
Retirement plan assets can be a practical source from which to make gifts. A Charitable IRA Rollover is described as a qualified charitable distribution, or money, that individuals may direct from their traditional IRA to eligible charitable and non-profit organizations like The American College. If you are 70 1/2 years or older, and the owner of an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), up to $100,000 can be distributed and used to satisfy any IRA required minimum distributions for the year. Distributions from an IRA must be made by December 31, 2013 to qualify. The IRA owner must direct the account custodian to transfer the gift directly to the charity.

The holiday season is a time for giving and there is still time and numerous ways for you to make a year-end gift, reduce income taxes, and more importantly, provide meaningful support to your favorite organization.

For information and further assistance on how to support The American College, please contact: Allen Thomas (610-526-1422) or Claudia Stowers (610-526-1423).

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Resource: Know Your Financial Adviser

The CFPB continues its work in helping seniors and other consumers better understand designations and what they represent, and your College supports this meaningful effort. The latest release is a tool for senior consumers called "Know Your Financial Adviser." The CFPB recommends that professional designations require college-level coursework, offer the ability for consumers to file a complaint against a designee, and be issued by an accredited organization.

If you hold a designation from The American College, be sure to check your listing periodically on DesignationCheck.com to make sure your information is current. We want to support CFPB's work in making sure that consumers have access to timely, accurate information related to their financial advisers.

Dr. Larry BartonA Letter from our President

We intend to become a critical force in preparing a new generation of agents and advisors through our new FSCP™ (Financial Services Certified Professional™) program that launches January 1.

The content is new, dynamic and unlike anything available in financial services education: we will add an average of two new educational modules every quarter in 2014 and beyond, tapping the best experts across a variety of relevant, critical topics.

Do you need to know more about the Affordable Care Act? How are your competitors leveraging social media to grow their practices? What statutory changes are forthcoming that will impact your clients? What do you need to know to properly counsel clients on divorce planning? FSCP™, the successor to the LUTCF designation, is the first stop for new and experienced advisors who want to refresh their practices.

The new program begins in January, but you can begin courses that will provide credit toward the FSCP™ now. To learn more, visit TheAmericanCollege.edu/FSCP.

Thank you, and enjoy this issue of Connections.

ChFC - Chartered Financial Consultant
Planners are Increasingly Choosing ChFC®:
2014 Will Be Another Year of Growth for this Popular Credential
The American College educates more financial planners than any other accredited institution. Through the professionals pursuing our leading designations, our practitioner master’s degree (MSFS), and now the new Ph.D. in Financial and Retirement Planning, we are able to see and analyze trends in the planning field first.

What we’re seeing is an emerging shift in educational preferences. Because of a number of factors, including ongoing challenges the CFP Board has been facing, more planners are now choosing ChFC® as their preferred professional credential.

Some curriculum enhancements are underway now to create even more value for planners pursuing their ChFC®, with changes to be announced in early 2014. Please share your feedback on any of our programs for planners by emailing info@theamericancollege.edu. Media Puff or Real Stuff: Social Media Insights (Based on Real Data!) for Financial Professionals

Media Puff or Real StuffThe advisor of today has many avenues to explore in the realm of social media. As their in-boxes are flooded with new social media webcasts, blogs, and YouTube videos on ways to become expert in this space, it has become increasingly important to understand how social media can be used in a way that is genuine, compliant and attractive to consumers - if it should be used at all. Before jumping headlong into the social media sphere, advisors are asking questions like: Can social media build referrals? Do clients shop for advisors in the social media marketplace? Should it be a top marketing strategy? If so, where do I start?

In response to their plea for more and better information, The Northwestern Mutual Granum Center at The American College recently conducted original, objective research to shed light on emerging trends in social media. You can use your credit card. You can receive mailed reminders. Or you can always contact us to make your gift by calling 610-526-1323.
  2. Online—You can make a gift immediately and directly through our secure website TheAmericanCollege.edu/Giving. You can also save your online gift for “Giving Tuesday” on December 3, 2013. Just like Black Friday has become famous for kicking off the holiday shopping season, "Giving Tuesday" is a national effort to help charities raise money online the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
  3. Mail—Simply complete the reply card with a gift that works best for you. Don't forget to complete the matching gift option if your firm offers such a program. If you are unsure, check your company's name at: TheAmericanCollege.edu/Giving/Matching-Gifts.

Remember, matching funds count toward your placement in prestigious giving societies like the President's Circle, the Chairman's Council, the Huebner Society, or the 1927 Society.

Most importantly, you should know that your support truly helps us to maintain the highest standards in education and professional development.

RICP® Designation Breaking Registration Records

Thousands of registrations for RICP® courses in just the first year of the mark make it one of the fastest growing designations in financial services. These three video-driven courses are all available in a single package, and program director Dave Littell, Director of the New York Life Center for Retirement, constantly strives to keep our RICP® curriculum current. One interesting development in this area is the managed payout fund. These are generally open-ended mutual funds offered by mutual fund companies designed to support a specified periodic withdrawal.

John Ameriks of Vanguard

In the video above, John Ameriks of Vanguard, describes some of the funds currently available and how they work. What’s new about these funds is that they have been designed with a range of objectives, payout rates, and other features which illustrate many of the trade-offs involved with retirement income strategies.

Another recent product offering that has begun to take off is the deferred income annuity. Sales of these products recently hit one billion dollars. This is a fixed annuity payment that begins at a later date. In the video below, Curtis Cloke discusses how to use deferred income annuities in a retirement income plan.

The American College - Connections: Inside The DNA of Financial Services
July 2013

Dr. Larry BartonA Letter from The President of The American College

Dear Graduate:

Do you know why I am proud of you?

By earning your designation or degree from The American College, you demonstrated to clients, peers and regulators that you understand the importance of education and ethics as attributes of an effective practice.

Take a look at this ad, just released, from a group that will award you two designations in just a few days of study. Is the sponsor an accredited university? What is the pass rate of graduates? Is there a full-time faculty? Are these designations you would want to place on your business cards, and what would compliance officers and regulators think?

Do yourself, and the legacy of Dr. Solomon Huebner, a favor. Share this message with others. Let's ensure that we stand united- 155,000 graduates who understand what a professional designation means. It means rigor, testing, a real curriculum, having to retake exams as needed, and having your credentials recognized by regulators as being best-in-class. For these people to claim they have "the most sought after training in the financial services industry" is a joke. However, it's not funny.

The program referenced above may be education, and I encourage every advisor to learn from any program of value. However, ten years ago I went on CNN and spoke out against the proliferation of designations. Many companies have since ceased to reimburse for or recognize the alphabet soup that's out there. It's confusing to clients. Your College is working with regulators in Washington to trim the list, promote the best and eliminate the clutter.

In this regard, I am enormously proud to announce that starting this fall, your College will begin offering an incredible exam prep program for those studying to become a Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®)*, one of the most respected designations with global recognition, similar to the CLU®, ChFC® and the CFP® Certification. We will be announcing more details in just a few weeks.

When I think about weekend designations, I get angry.  I want you to be angry, too.  Let me know your thoughts by emailing me at: Larry.Barton@TheAmericanCollege.edu.

Thank you, and enjoy this issue of Connections.

Dr. Larry Barton

CLU - Advanced Designations and ChFC

The American College worked with client companies last fall to analyze performance for almost 32,000 advisors, determining how holding a CLU® or ChFC® impacts productivity, retention, field leadership and compliance results. The study also examined how the LUTCF training courses impact early career success.

Study results were normalized for advisor career stage, and the data came directly from company sources:

  • Advisors with a CLU® earn an average of 22% more than their peers with no designation.
  • Advisors with a ChFC® earn an average of 51% more than their peers with no designation.
  • 81.4% of compliance issues come from advisors without advanced education.
  • Advisors who complete skills-training programs at The American College in the early years of their career are 72% more productive and have a 90% longer average tenure during the first four years.
  • Field leaders are 59% more likely to hold a CLU® or ChFC® designation.

Now is the perfect time to encourage your colleagues to pursue their professional education.

March 2013

Get the Word Out: March is New Student Month

March Enrollment Express

March is unlike any other month in the history of The American College. We want to encourage new students to start a designation program than we have ever had enroll in a single month. We’re making it easy for you and your colleagues to participate and share the advantages of professional education with the March Enrollment Express Campaign.

Pass on this message to a colleague or co-worker so they too can earn a designation from Your College. Continuing throughout the month of March, new students can gain these benefits:

  • No new student fee
  • A choice of three courses:
o Financial Planning: Process & Environment (HS 300) for those starting CFP® or ChFC®
o Fundamentals of Insurance Planning (HS 311) for those starting CLU®
o Prospecting (FA 200) for new advisors starting LUTCF
  • Access to optional live lecture classes to supplement self-study (for HS 300 and HS 311) at no additional cost

Encourage new students to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting:

The Long-Term Care Risk

A Developing and Accelerating Crisis for Seniors
by Theodore T. Kurlowicz, JD, CAP®, ChFC®, CLU®, AEP and Christopher P. Woehrle, JD (The Wealth Channel Magazine, Winter 2012, p. 39-44)

A developing and Accelerating Crisis For Seniors

The U.S. population continues to age rapidly—as of 2010, over 42 million Americans were age 65 or older, and this number is expected to double by 2050. As the population ages, the risk of disability and the need for long-term care (LTC) also rises. However, the size of the national debt, coupled with a slow-growing economy, is leading to reduced government reimbursements. Authors Ted Kurlowicz and Christopher Woehrle address the impoverishment rules and multi-generational impact related to Medicaid qualification and LTC for seniors.

Roy Simmons, RICP®, ChFC®, CLU®, CASL®, CFP®
Associate Wealth Management Advisor
Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, Columbia, SC

Fastest Growing RICP® Program Congratulates First Designee!

Thousands of program registrations since the RICP® launched last spring have made this retirement income designation one of the fastest growing programs in The College's long history. Mr. Roy Simmons was the first to complete all three courses and begin to enjoy the advanced knowledge and competitive advantage of using the RICP® designation..

Here is a quote from Mr. Simmons:

“I feel that the Retirement Income Certified Professional® curriculum is the finest ever produced by The American College. The combination of video-taped interviews, discussions with authorities in the retirement field, and the quality of the course outlines makes studying this material a great privilege. It is very rare that educational materials can be taken straight from the classroom to the conference room. The RICP® curriculum is just such an educational material.”
