All Educational Programs Are Not Created Equal: You Need a Designation to Navigate the Changes in Healthcare

Certificates, continuing education, webinars, and one-day courses can play a role in helping you understand certain aspects of the changes in healthcare. The Affordable Care Act, however, is highly complex. It’s critical that you are able to help your clients grasp the full impact of the legislation on their coverage choices.

The nuances of the law are too numerous and significant to be covered only through “drive-by” education. You need a real designation program, with key courses delivered live online by an expert, and the opportunity to ask questions and gain perspective on the many facets of the legislation that might otherwise be missed.

True designation programs—those offered by accredited, non-profit institutions of higher learning and consisting of three or more college-level courses—represent in-depth knowledge of a particular subject area. Companies generally allow only these types of respected marks to be displayed on business cards and used with the public as another indication of why your advice should be trusted. Real designations include continuing education, ethics, and strict examination requirements.

For those wanting to learn about financial planning or insurance, there are a handful of these high-quality marks, including CFP® certification, CLU® for insurance, ChFC® for advanced financial planning, and RICP™ for retirement income planning. In the healthcare space, thousands of advisors have turned to the ChHC™, the Chartered Healthcare Consultant™. This program includes one entire course on the intricacies of the Affordable Care Act and another on making an effective transition to a healthcare consulting model. Other topics in this six-course designation include individual health insurance, group benefits, and your choice of a range of electives to personalize the program to your practice.

By all means pursue other valuable educational opportunities from your company, your professional association, and subject-matter experts. For the cornerstone of your learning about the new world of healthcare, however, count on a proven professional designation that can set your practice apart from others in your field who have not made this significant commitment to advanced, practical knowledge.
