James M. Moten Jr, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Financial Planning and Director of the Master of Science in Financial Planning (MSFP) program at The American College of Financial Services. He has been associated with The College since 2015, when he served as HS333 Case Grader. He also taught the Insurance, Retirement and Investment sections of the CFP® Certification Education program from 2014-2016. He joined the college full-time at the end of December 2020. He previously served as an Assistant Professor of Financial Planning and CFP® Program Director for the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and East Central University. He also served as the Professor of Insurance Management and Discipline Lead for the Insurance Management Program at Collin College.

Dr. Moten has published three textbooks: Advanced Financial Management: Theory and Application; Introductory Financial Management: Theory and Application; and Personal Financial Literacy: A Practical Approach through BVT Publishing. Dr. Moten also co-wrote "Chapter 17: Insurance and Risk Management" for Victor Ricciardi’s book Financial Behavior: Players, Services, Products, and Markets, published by Oxford Press.

Prior to academia, Dr. Moten served in the United States Army for 11 years. His last postings were in Baghdad, Iraq and Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as Company Commander for Bravo Forward Support Company, 2nd Brigade, 1st Calvary Division. He has been involved in the insurance industry since 2008 and the financial services industry since 2010. His financial services roles have included jobs at Primerica Financial Services, National Financial Group, and as a Financial Counselor for Zieders Enterprises. He holds the Series 7, Series 6, Series 65, Series 63, Series 26, Life and Health, and Property and Casualty Licenses in multiple states. In addition to licensure, he holds the CFP®, ChFC®, AFC®, CMFC®, and CRPC® professional designations.
