Adjunct Professor of Gerontology

Sandra Timmermann, EdD, is Adjunct Professor of Gerontology in the PhD program at The American College of Financial Services. She also serves as a consultant to The American College New York Life Center for Retirement Income.
Dr. Timmermann is a nationally recognized gerontologist with a focus on aging and its relation to business. Her areas of expertise focus on global demographic changes and on retirement life stage issues ranging from retirement finances, family needs, intergenerational relationships, housing and aging in place, employment, health and long-term care, and other transitional topics. She has established a business, and she is also currently working with a financial services company and a firm specializing in developing active adult communities.
Dr. Timmermann writes for professional publications and is the Financial Gerontology columnist for the Journal of Financial Service Professionals. She is a frequent speaker on aging issues at national conferences and seminars, and has been interviewed by major media including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, USA Today, MarketWatch, Bloomberg and others. She is a Senior Fellow at the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER) and Special Advisor to the Board of the Retirement Income Industry Association (RIIA). She has served in leadership with a number of national organizations including the Board of Directors of the American Society on Aging (ASA), as Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Alliance for Caregiving and Chair of the Business Forum on Aging. She was a delegate to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging, and she received the Gloria Cavanaugh Award for Excellence in Training and Education by the American Society on Aging.
Dr. Timmerman founded the MetLife Mature Market Institute in 1997 and was its Executive Director and a Vice President of MetLife until the Institute disbanded in 2013. It was the company’s center of expertise, strategy, and thought leadership on the 50+ market. Prior to joining MetLife, Dr. Timmermann held senior staff positions with several national aging organizations including the American Society on Aging, AARP and SeniorNet. Earlier in her career, she worked with corporate clients as an account supervisor in public relations and marketing agencies. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado and Master of Arts and Doctor of Education degrees from Columbia University.
