President and CEO George Nichols III, CAP®, reflects on Juneteenth, The College’s centennial, and upcoming initiatives, including the 20th annual CAAFP event this August.

As our nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, Juneteenth offers an important moment to reflect on the full story of our country’s journey toward freedom, opportunity, and progress.
At its core, Juneteenth is about freedom. The holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved Americans in Texas finally learned of their emancipation, underscoring how access, opportunity, and economic empowerment have long been interconnected in the American story. It is both a celebration of resilience and a reminder that the work of expanding access is never truly finished.
That reminder carries special meaning at The American College of Financial Services this year. In 2027, The College will celebrate its centennial anniversary. That’s 100 years dedicated to advancing applied financial knowledge and helping financial professionals better serve the ever-evolving needs of society.
Reaching that milestone invites us to look ahead with purpose. It reminds us that our future progress depends on ensuring more professionals see themselves represented within the financial services profession and have access to the education, mentorship, and opportunities they need to succeed.
Juneteenth challenges us to honor history while also considering the legacy we are building today.
Through the work of the Center for Economic Empowerment and Equality (CEEE), we continue to invest in initiatives like the Center’s Executive Leadership Program and our ongoing research on Black women and trust that strengthen representation across financial services.
This year also marks the 20th annual Conference of African American Financial Professionals (CAAFP). What began two decades ago as a focused effort to create community and opportunity has evolved into a space where careers are launched, leaders are developed, and lasting professional networks are built.
Perhaps most importantly, CAAFP has helped reshape conversations across financial services about who belongs in this profession and how the industry can better reflect the communities depending on it. Its growth speaks to a powerful idea: the profession is strongest when talented individuals of all backgrounds can see a future for themselves in it.
As we approach both America’s 250th birthday and The College’s 100th anniversary, we have an opportunity to think carefully about the future we want to build and the legacy we want to leave behind.
Juneteenth reminds us that progress is achieved through action. It calls on all of us to continue opening doors, investing in people, and creating a future that allows the next generation of professionals to prosper.
This year’s CAAFP will center on the theme “Connections Across Generations.” On this Juneteenth, I invite you to reflect with us on the importance of those connections and the role each of us can play in strengthening them. Together, we can carry opportunity, representation, and financial empowerment forward across generations and into the next century of possibility.
